Meatless Monday for kidney health

Information on how Meatless Monday and plant-based eating can help improve and maintain kidney health.

Meatless Monday encourages people to take the first step toward a healthier lifestyle by cutting out meat just one day a week and eating more plant-based foods.

Eating a balanced diet that consists primarily of plant-based foods can help promote kidney health

Meatless Monday has partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to encourage people to make healthier changes to their diets in support of kidney health.

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading risk factors for kidney disease and often the first and second most common cause of kidney failure. Reducing consumption of red and processed meat and eating more plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes, can help lead to:

  • Better kidney health
  • Better management of kidney disease
  • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Lower risk of diabetes
  • Healthy weight management

Kidney disease is more common than you might think

According to the National Kidney Foundation

  • In the U. S., about 30 million adults have chronic kidney disease—and most aren’t aware of it.
  • One in three American adults are at risk for chronic kidney disease. Risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and family history.
