Inspired by national “meatless days” that helped the war effort during World Wars I and World War II, Meatless Monday has grown into a global movement. It has been embraced by celebrity chefs, social media influencers, health professionals, educators, city leaders, restaurants, corporations, institutions, and individuals worldwide.
During World War I and World War II, the U.S. government introduced national meatless and wheatless days, a patriotic gesture aimed at conserving food for U.S. troops abroad.
Meatless days during World War I
As the U.S. enters World War I, President Wilson outlines a program to adequately distribute food to the U.S. civilian population, the military, and the Allies in Europe. In 1918, the Food Administration asks U.S. households to pledge to observe a meatless Tuesday, a pork-less Tuesday and Saturday, and a meatless meal each day, since food access in Europe is becoming increasingly dire. During this period, the Food Administration facilitates a nearly eightfold increase in pork and nearly tenfold increase in beef exported to Europe.
Meatless days during World War II
After the U.S. enters World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt raises the idea that if a meatless day is observed one day per week in the U.S., it would free up 30 to 40 ships that could be used for military purposes instead of for importing meat from Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia. In 1943, the U.S. government begins rationing meat, limiting the supply to both restaurants and individuals. As meat supplies rise again in 1945, meatless Tuesdays end in cities. When World War II ends, the U.S. public is asked to keep conserving food to aid postwar famine relief in Europe. In a 1947 U.S. Gallup poll, 22% of respondents report they observe meatless Tuesdays, while 38% indicate they plan to do so.
