K–12 sample outreach email

A sample outreach letter to secure key stakeholder support for a new Meatless Monday program in a classroom or school cafeteria

Dear ____,

I am interested in starting a Meatless Monday program at our school. I’ve been doing some research and found that Meatless Monday is a simple way to introduce healthy and sustainable eating habits to both the student body and members of the faculty and staff. Eating a little less meat each week can have major benefits for our health—lower risk of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity—and for the planet lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduced water usage, and improved soil quality.

It doesn’t take much to get a Meatless Monday program started. Many of the necessary resources and materials are free to download and include sample lesson plans (for teachers), graphics and activities (for classrooms), and recipes, printable posters, and other marketing materials (for cafeteria and foodservice staff) — all of which have been vetted by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. And you don’t need to eliminate meat entirely from the menu; simply add more plant-based options and highlight them. Adding plant-based or meat-free menu items can reduce costs for cafeterias and foodservice operators.

I suggest setting up a meeting with the foodservice team or other faculty members to see how we can successfully bring Meatless Monday to our school. Here are some examples of how other schools have implemented Meatless Monday. It’s totally customizable based on capacity, preference, and goals. Excited to take the next steps forward!

Thank you,
